"Founded in November 2011 by Korea Government, the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) supports basic research within the entire range of natural sciences including physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, earth science, and astronomy by providing highly advanced, supportive, self-direct research environments."
IBS invites applications for the positions of Associate Directors who are senior-level researchers with high research potentials, running own research group in collaboration with the directors within their Research Centers.
The Center for Nanoparticle Research focuses on the synthesis of nanoparticles and their applications. In particular, we have intensively studied the unlimited application potential for nanoparticles in the medical and energy areas.
Our research team strives to illuminate the fundamental principles of the formation of nanoparticles and their nature by synthesizing nanoparticles using chemical methods, and by elucidating the chemical and physical properties of nanoparticles. Furthermore, we aim to explore the formation mechanism of nanoparticles. In addition, we have tried to study alignment and modification of synthesized nanoparticles and manufactured nanostructures with multiple functions, and to apply what we have learned to medical (e.g., medical diagnosis and treatment) and energy fields (e.g., electrochemical materials and catalysts).
The Center for Nanoparticle Research at the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) serves the following purposes:
Firstly, the center plans to grow into a world-renowned laboratory to manufacture nanoparticles and to apply them to medical and energy-related research. Secondly, the center aims to lead nanotechnology in the country and to become a world-leading training center of researchers in the nanoparticle field (South Korea has gained its reputation as its leading role in nanotechnology.) Thirdly, the center aims to play a crucial role in nanoparticle research across Asia as well.

The Center for Nanoparticle Research, located within the Chemical Engineering Department at Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea, has an associate director position available in the area of Nanoscale Electrochemistry or Energy Applications of Nanoparticles.
Candidates with Ph.D. degrees in chemistry, physics, materials science, or related fields are invited to apply. In collaboration with Taeghwan Hyeon (thyeon@snu.ac.kr), the Associate Director will perform original research using electrochemical, structural, and surface analysis, and developing in-situ techniques to investigate the mechanisms governing charge transfer and surface stability in energy storage materials. Close collaboration with partners within and outside the Center for nanoparticle Research is expected.
In-depth knowledge in electrochemistry and experience in application of nanomaterials are highly recommended. Furthermore, experiences with in-situ devices, such as infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, are highly desirable but not required. Candidates would have an opportunity to work with state-of-the-art transmission electron microscope, and nanomaterial synthesis facilities at IBS and Seoul National University to perform original experimental materials research on programs funded through the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning of Korea.
